The Local Musician Guide
And MP3 Library
Bands come and go or switch members with such rapidity that no guide to musicians in this area could ever prove accurate. If so, such a beast couldn't stay accurate or comprehensive long. But that's a risk we'll take in trying to compile this guide to our incredible music scene.
Below is a list of groups which, at press time, are either from Southern Illinois or playing here often, as well as a brief description of their musical styles. Under the names of the bands are email contacts (if any), the names of their CDs (if any), then the songs that were posted from those discs. If the song isn't on the same line as an album title, it came off a compilation or an unreleased demo CD.
Songs are posted in MP3 format at a bit rate of 112 or 120 kilobytes per second. Those who want to hear the music of these groups in all their uncompressed glory ought to pony up and buy their CDs. The MP3s on this site are just to whet your appetites for more, not to completely satisfy your desires for them.
There are probably a few bugs and bum email and web addresses on this site. If you find any, please email us and let us know.
Do You Want to Be Included?
Musicians who wish to be included in updates of this band directory must live in the 618 area code and send relevant press information (band name, musical style, titles of musical releases and the formats on which they are available, and contact info, including email and phone numbers) to the Nightlife, or by snail mail to 701 West Main, Carbondale, IL 62901.
Bands who want this list to link to their site should electronically send that request, complete with the relevant URL, to us. Please also send us any URLs that contain direct links to any songs you have posted online.
We post MP3s of local musicians at no charge. Musicians who want us to post an MP3 of their music need to send us expressed written consent to our snail or email address (above). They must include a compact disc- no other formats are acceptable. Recordings must also be CD quality-- we will not post basement recordings.
Contacting Local Musicians
To respect the privacy of our local musicians, we will not publish phone numbers online. Legitimate club owners or booking agents who want a band's phone number can email or call us at (618) 549-2799, and we'll happily provide it.
If someone was omitted from this list, it is either an innocent oversight, or the band is so new that we simply haven't gotten around to it yet. In such a case, that's what the weekly publication of the Nightlife is for: continuously updating the events and personalities in, and passing through, this region. Hope this helps you in a search for quality live entertainment.
Musicians who no longer live in the area or groups that have disbanded are now listed in Highway 51 Revisited: The Local MP3 Archive. Look there for websites, contact information, and ultrarare recordings.
