Jan 28: Wow, so much has happened since our last blog... We had a wonderful time on Hilton Head Island with Connie and Kurt, their two children and their families, and Kilean and Kimberly and their families. Rosie and Paul had such a wonderful time playing with their cousins - 13 in all! Aunt Connie cooked an outstanding Thanksgiving dinner and she and Kurt took care of everyone. So many people! We also met the wonderful women who run the Litter Box (thrift store that raises money for humane shelters) where Aunt Connie volunteers. We were fortunate enought to spend the week staying in Connie and Kurt's next door neighbor's house while they were away for the holiday. The Graves are truly generous people for taking on all three of the Kennedy kids and their children! Sadly, Mrs. Graves passed away from cancer shortly after Christmas. We keep her family in our hearts and prayers. Christmas was wonderful. We stayed in Carbondale and spent the holiday with the Gordons - Grandma Diann, Grandpa Jeff, Uncle Joe and Aunt Jessi and Aunt Lynn (what a wonderful family!). Jeff and Diann cooked an outstanding meal and we all had great fun. Rosie made most of our Christmas gifts this year and they were a huge success. She's quite the little artist. Paul, of course, was much more interested in wrapping paper and boxes than gifts. This week we experienced a pretty heavy ice storm and have been cooped-up in the house since Monday. The kids are going stir crazy although we did get enough snow for Rosie and Daddy to make a snowman this afternoon. It looks like we will all be back to school and work tomorrow (thank goodness!). Rosie is doing so well and she is so excited to get back to school. She is such a beautiful, happy, friendly little girl and a real inspiration for all of us. Her face is healing nicely, the scars are getting less red every day, and her arm and leg are also healing well. We had to reschedule her appt for January so we will meet again with Dr. O'Dell in February. He wants to hold off on more surgeries until he is certain the ligament used to hold up her chin and what will be her bottom lip remains strong. On that note she is still seeing a speech therapist and the progress has been profound. She's a resourceful and very determined little girl. Thank you so much to everyone for the beautiful messages. We are so grateful that you are still thinking of us and keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. Your love and support and the love and support of those around us keep us going and give us the positive energy we need to get through the rough times, better appreciate the good times, and look to the future. We are very thankful! Much love to all, Kendra

Nov 03: Quite a few things have happened since our last blog... Rosie's appt with her surgeon in St. Louis went really well. Dr. O'Dell is very happy with her progress and wants to hold off on more surgeries for some time. We see him again in January. Halloween was great fun! Rosie and her class had a wonderful costumed Octoberfest with lots of games and goodies (Thank you to soon-to-be-again Mama B for helping out with a super fun game!). Then Rosie enjoyed tricks and many treats with friends in Murphysboro. What a wonderful group of kids! I want to especially thank Dawn Hayes for such a fun night. We hope to make this an annual event for our family. After the party at school and trick or treating, Rosie had enough energy to hand out candy to trick or treaters with brother Paul at our house in Murphysboro. Believe me, those kids got lots of candy!!!! Also on Halloween night our friends hosted a Rock out for Rosie benefit at Booby's in Carbondale. We want to sincerely thank Jef Hill of the Himalayas and the other generous bands who performed, and much love and thanks to all those who contributed. Tom was able to attend and represent the family while I stayed home, exhausted, with the kids. What an amazing weekend! What a wonderful place to live! We are so thankful. Kendra

Oct 20: I first want to thank Grandma Diann for keeping up with the blogs. We are very busy these days! AND we've had a rough couple of weeks battling various colds, strep throats, etc. and Tom is currently fighting a badly infected cut. However, we are all in good spirits and humming right along. Rosie's next appointment in St. Louis is October 27 - at that time we hope to find out more about her next surgery. She is doing really well in school and can't wait to wear her costume to class on Halloween! (for those of you who know Rosie's sense of fashion, her costume will probably look a lot like her everyday attire!) On a side note we just want to say how much we love Aunt Kelley, how proud we are of her, and how much we miss Crazy Old Uncle Warren. In the words of Madeline Kahn, "What a guy..."

Oct 09: Wow, much has happened since our last blog. Rosie had her first field trip at school - a Klassics for Kids concert at SIUC featuring Music from Mexico (during which Rosie & her classmates were asked to dance with the band!). We all had a wonderful time last weekend with Todd, Brenda, Harrison, Kevin, Ivy, Aunt Kelley and all the folks from the Noteworthy Group at their fall party. Thanks guys!!! Unfortunately, Rosie has been home from school the last two days with a ruptured ear drum (ouch!). She is on medication and doing much better this afternoon. She wants to feel well enough for her school field trip tomorrow to Green Retreat's pumpkin patch!

Sep 25: Sorry it has been so long since our last blog - Rosie and her little brother are keeping us on our toes! Last Sunday we all had a wonderful time at Aunt Lynn's housewarming party. Rosie had great fun playing with her friend Haleigh and hopes they can play together again soon. At school, Rosie is learning lots of new Spanish words and songs and, as you might expect, says "show and tell" is her favorite subject! We are both looking forward to her first field trip with her classmates next Tuesday. Continued thanks for the love and support from all our friends and family - old and new. Kendra

Sep 12: HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Grandma Diann Gordon!! Your continued love and support keep this family going . We love you very much and hope you have a wonderful birthday celebration! Tom, Kendra, Rosie and Paul

Sep 12: Rosie is doing really well in school! She's learning Spanish, letter formation, number formation, and in science she and her classmates are learning all about germination. This week she was asked to take a special "forever" book to class to have read aloud and she chose "Good Night, Little Mouse" by Dougald Steer. The book was a Christmas present from her Grandpa Gordon. I have started doing lunch/playground duty three days a week and have been excited to see Rosie laugh and play with her new friends (most of the time she is having way too much fun to notice her mom!). We are all just so happy with how everything is going at CNS - what a special place. Right now Rosie is playing with her Aunt Lynn and getting geared up for the Apple Fest Parade in the morning. (Little Paul is in bed). We hope to see the Masterson clan, Aunt Lynn, Grandma Gordon, and Aunt Kelly with Crazy 'ol Uncle Warren all at our house tomorrow for the parade! Continued thanks for the well-wishes and generosity. And our hearts go out to Rosie and Aaron, and to the Mowrys - we are sending lots of love your way. Best, Kendra

Aug 28: Rosie met with her primary ENT doctor this past Monday in St. Louis and received a glowing report! Her doctor, Dr. O'Dell, is very happy with her recovery and is only worried about her weight gain. (she's always been a skinny kid!) He explained in great detail to Tom and I that the tissue used to rebuild her chin will be thinned and "sculpted" to make her bottom lip. We will see him again in two months with the next surgery date to be determined. He assured us the upcoming surgery (and successive surgeries) will be much less traumatic than the initial reconstruction. After the visit we had a fun day in St. Louis and then stopped by to see our friends Joe & Pat O'Dell in Percy. (no relation!) While at the O'Dell's Rosie played and sang several songs for us on their piano. We had a wonderful time! Thank you Joe and Pat and thanks to Grandma Gordon for keeping Paul all day! Unfortunately, Rosie is currently home from school with strep throat but she's on medication and should be better soon - she really wants to get back to school and misses all her friends! I want to give continued thanks to all who are leaving such wonderful messages of love and encouragement and for all of the generous donations. (I really hope to get the family to Monticello soon to meet everyone!) Much love, Kendra

Aug 24: Rosie started school last Tuesday. She is in Pre-K (all day) at Carbondale New School and she loves it! She is making lots of new friends and learning lots of new, fun things. I had a talk with her class Tues morning (while she toured the school) and answered any questions the kids had about her appearance. Everyone had a "boo boo" story! The Director of CNS talked to the other students. Everyone is treating Rosie like a normal kid. She sees her ENT doctor for the first time since we left the hospital on Monday (tomorrow) morning. More after her appointment. Love and Thanks, Kendra

Aug 16: Rosie is doing unbelievably well - dancing and singing all over the place! On Thursday, she visited with Amy Gulley at First Southern Bank (thanks Amy!) and everyone else who was there! Then we went for a visit to Thomas Publishing where she spent some quality time with Aunt Chicken. Rosie's first day of school is next Tuesday and she is very excited about learning and making new friends. Her next doctor's appt in St. Louis is Monday, Aug 25. At that time we will learn what the plans are for her next surgery. Once again, we want to thank everyone who was involved with Rock Out for Rosie - what a great night!! What a great success!! Love, Kendra

Aug 10: WOW. Words cannot express how we feel about the love, generosity, good will, and beautiful friendship shown to all of us this weekend. We are going to do our best in the coming weeks to thank everyone who was involved. For now, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Love, Tom, Kendra, Rosie, and Paul.

Advanced tickets can be purchased at Harbaugh's Cafe or by calling Thomas Publishing at (618) 549-2799. (Kendra)

Jul 31: This morning Rosie wanted to know about the upcoming "Rock Out for Rosie" benefit after seeing her photo on a ticket. She is very happy that so many people care about her and want to "make her chin feel better"! Overall, she is doing really well. She has tons of energy and keeps us all hopping! Rosie wants to let Sofi know she misses playing dress-up with her and hopes she is doing well in Springfield - where Homer Simpson lives.(!!) Love to all! Kendra

Jul 28: On Saturday Rosie played with friends at a birthday party and had a great time. She then spent most of Sunday swimming at Grandma & Grandpa's. According to her stories there were whales and dolphins in the pool!?

Jul 25: Rosie's progress is astounding! As of last night she has started asking for her medicine (rather than hiding from it) and she has started putting peroxide and bacitracin on herself. Hopefully this will keep up. Thanks, Tom

Jul 23: Rosie is doing really well, and Grandma Diann is doing a great job of keeping everyone updated on her progress! We are slowly settling back into our normal routines... A special thanks to Cathy, Steve and Everett on your upcoming "Kids Rock for Rosie" Garden Art Project at Camp Festus in M'Boro this Friday. We really appreciate your thoughtfulness. It sounds like a rockin' good time!

Jul 21: Thank you Kaitlyn and crew for getting people out to the park on such a hot day. You All Rock!

Jul 19: Thank you Kaitlyn - YOU ROCK!! Tom will definitely be there tomorrow. Call us if you need anything. Rosie is doing great today. She seems to have fallen right back into the swing of things and plans to help dad garden this evening. Paul is walking now and it's a real hoot to watch he and Rosie play together. Now, if we could just get her to eat something besides chicken nuggets... (!!) More later, Kendra

Jul 18: Adjusting to home and Paul's newfound walking abilities. Rosie is very happy to be home, making it more difficult to get her to take her meds than it was in the hospital, but we can work through that. Thanks and Love to everyone for helping make our month in St. Louis much less stressful than it could have been. Thomas J

Jul 17: Rosie has been discharged and we are on our way home!

Jul 16: Rosie is doing so well! She walked up two flights of stairs with Aunt Jessi and I. And, she took several more walks around the hospital hallways. She was also seen by the head of the ENT team today and he is so happy with her progress it looks like we may be coming home sooner than I thought! Thank you to everyone who posts messages on this blog. We check it every day and it helps us to keep the positive energy flowing. And we want to thank all of you wonderful folks at The Noteworthy Group for the use of this outstanding Apple laptop. Without it we wouldn't be able to keep these progress reports coming! Hope to see you soon!

Jul 15: An ice cream social with a 7 foot penguin, a Barbie bedpan pool party, shaking her booty to mom's best off-key KC and the Sunshine Band, a walk through the hospital flower garden with dad... Boy are we tired - but Rosie sure isn't!!!!!! She is eating and moving around more and more every day. With the approval of the head of ENT she will be moving to the 5th floor tomorrow (the "rehab" floor). Not exactly sure what we have in store but we most definitely will not be coming home this week. Maybe we'll be home by the end of next week?? The Docs want to make sure Rosie is in tip top shape before they send her home, and we agree!! We are looking forward to a visit from Uncle Joe and Aunt Jessi tomorrow. I am sure Rosie will keep them on their toes! Thanks to everyone for all your wonderful words of encouragement. We hope to be home soon. Much love, Kendra

Jul 14: We might move for the 3rd time in a week. This time we will go to 5th floor rehab in order to get more than 30 minutes of physical therapy a day. Hopefully we can go home before the week is over! She is becoming more restless and anxious to get out of the hospital daily...So are we. Thank You

Jul 13: Rosie's doctors are so pleased with her eating that we may be able to go home next week without the feeding tube! Today's Menu:Grits,Vanilla Yogurt,Peaches,Mashed Potatoes,Chocolate Pudding,Ketchup,Spaghetti,Chocolate Milk, and Apple Juice. She also "drove" a Little Tikes car around the hallways. Love and Thanks to you all. Tom

Jul 12: Rosie had a wonderful day today! More mashed potatoes, more games, more books, more dancing in the bed - she's wearing us out! We are working very hard on eating with a spoon and trying different ways to drink (sippy cups, straws, etc.) If all goes well we should be going home soon! Many thanks for all of the wonderful birthday presents that just keep coming! And, Rosie really enjoyed her visit with Aunt Chicken, Kaitlyn, Aunt Lynn and Nikki. What a fun time she had! Much love to all, Kendra

Jul 12: Extra special thanks to the Carbondale ER. Without your quick thinking and actions we may not be at this point today. Thank you also to the Arch helicopter team. You are all consummate professionals, you save lives every day, and I can't think of a more noble profession. From the moment we arrived at the ER, until the helicopter left, you calmed us down and made us feel confident that she was going to be OK. We thank you and Rosie thanks you!! Tom Gordon

Jul 12: Yesterday was very good! Rosie ate a lot more mashed potatoes, part of a pink lollipop, and a cherry snow cone. Most of the nausea seems to be gone. She is still trying to get her feeding tube out, which must feel very strange and may become an ongoing battle as we may have to go home with it. She was awake and active for 9hrs yesterday (the longest she's been awake since she's been here) Now that she is feeling better and realizes that she has guests she is putting on a little show for everyone. Her fiesty temper is showing as well. Thank You. Tom

Jul 10: Just cannot express how wonderful tonight went... Rosie ate a whole serving of mashed potatoes w/ gravy and drank two servings of juice all on her own, at her request! While taking a wagon ride she motioned for me to come near and said, "I have to tell you something - take me over there."!!!! The doctors think we may be able to come home in about a week, and that decision was made before all of the wonderful progress tonight! I'm off to bed. Tom is staying with Rosie tonight. More on Friday. Kendra

Jul 10: Rosie had a pretty good night although we are still battling nausea/vomiting. Her doctors are very happy with how well she is healing. Today, she has a full day planned of physical, occupational and speech therapy - not to mention lots of drawing and reading with mom and dad. Keep those positive thoughts coming! We can definitely feel all the love! More later... Kendra

Jul 09: Rosie had a great birthday! We played catch and kicked a ball back and forth in physical therapy! She was able to drink chocolate milk out of a straw!! Thank you all for the wonderful cards,comments,well-wishes,gifts,prayers,and positive thoughts. We made #4 a big one for her! Tom

Jul 09: HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAUTIFUL GIRL!!!!!!!!!!! Rosie is in her NEW ROOM in TCU and now it's time to decorate!!!!!! Hooray Rosa Lynn!!!

Jul 09: HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROSIE!!!!!!!!!!

Jul 08: Rosie had an unbelievably progressive day! She ate, She drank, She spoke! Tomorrow they are going to move her into a transitional room (what a great birthday present!) She still has a long way to go, but we are certainly moving in the right direction. It really was beautiful to hear her little voice say "Hi Daddy"! When we asked her how old she was going to be she held up four fingers and smiled! We wouldn't be at this point without all of your support! Love and Thanks to all!!! (Let's all hope she has the best birthday a 4-year-old in the hospital can have) Tom

Jul 08: Good morning! Today should be moving day and we're just one day away from Rosie's 4th birthday! I want to thank everyone who has sent birthday presents and well-wishes. We are very excited and can't wait for Roisie to see all of her visitors tomorrow. While visiting, we ask that no photos are taken of Rosie and that none of her birthday presents contain mirrors or large reflective surfaces. More progress updates as the day unfolds.. Thanks!

Jul 07: Wow, did Rosie have a great day! I don't even know where to start.. Well, a lady named Sue from OT came in and placed a splint on her left forearm and started to begin to get her interested in apple juice (eating and drinking are going to take some hard work), she and Sue played with her stuffed bears, I pulled her around the PICU in a wagon and she "giggled" at one of the little boys a few rooms away, we practiced stretching and pushing with her legs, we played with stuffed animals, she made art in her princess "color wonder" coloring book (thanks Meegs!), She waved at one of the nurses, and she almost successfully removed her feeding tube! I had to help the nurses restrain her to resecure it and she cried a little - which is just one more indication she is well on her way to returning to her spirited little self! She is still not speaking, however, and is still in quite a fog of medication. I was told by the doctors today it could take one to two weeks to wean her off the the high doses of medication she's been on. And while we are waiting for that medicated fog to lift, plans are underway to move her from PICU to TCU (transitional care unit) tomorrow before her birthday! One of the senior charge nurses from TCU visited today and filled us in on what we can expect. In TCU she'll have a private room, more freedom to move around, more visitors will be allowed at one time, and she'll have access to a really cool playroom! She is also set to meet with a physical therapist, speech therapist, play therapist, and her occupational therapist tomorrow and in the coming days. Go Rosie Go! I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of the wonderful nurses and doctors in the PICU at Cardinal Glennon. Actually I really want to give extra special love and thanks to the nurses whom we have gotten to know so well. You people are truly amazing and we will miss you! I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of my old childhood and high school friends for all of your love, support and encouragement. It has been way to long since I have been in contact with you and I hope to do better. Please feel free to email me personally kkgordon03@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from all of you!!!! Much love, Kendra

Jul 07: Kendra got to sit in a chair and hold Rosie on her lap yesterday. Rosie is still a little foggy as the sedatives are wearing off. OT is going to make a splint for her arm and make an assessment on her swallowing and speech. We are going to be able to pull her around the PICU in a wagon today! There is even some talk of moving up to the 3rd floor tomorrow. This is all a minute by minute situation and it's moving forward nicely so far. Keep all the thoughts and prayers coming! Thanks and Love to Everyone!! Tom

Jul 06: Rosie is much better today! And she also had a much better night last night. The doctors are still adjusting her medication, but she is no longer experiencing heavy withdrawal symptoms, just the occasional nausea/vomiting. OT will be in on Monday to help her begin to eat, to access the strength of the muscles in her jaw, and to decide on any speech therapy. We're just taking it one day at a time until she is up and about and feeding herself - then we can think about coming home!!! Many visitors are expected today, including little brother Paul. Please keep the thoughts and prayers coming! Much love to all. And thank you for the beautiful words of encouragement.

Jul 05: Rosie had a pretty difficult night. The doctors are trying to find the right mix of medications to help her with her drug withdrawal symptoms and it's slow going. Her nurses and doctors seem to think she should be more comfortable by this evening. She's still not fully awake and moving around. We hope to see that happen over the next week. On the upside the suture lines on her face and neck, the skin graft on her arm, and the graft removal site on her thigh look great and are healing well. I want to thank everyone again for your continuous support. All the love we're receiving is keeping us going. Tom is with her now and she's napping (finally!) more later tonight. Kendra

Jul 05: Rosie is awake. She had the breathing tube removed at about 6:30 PM. This is a very difficult time because she has to teach herself to use her "new" mouth. She is having agitated periods coming down off all the meds, Kendra is staying in her room tonight, and I think that one of us will have to do that every night now. All of the doctors are pleased with her progress.

Jul 04: Happy Independence Day! Rosie gains her independence from the breathing machine today. Soon thereafter she will wake up, and then the fireworks begin! We will keep everyone posted.

Jul 03: Well, Rosie had a brush with fame this afternoon and slept through the whole thing! Singer/songwriter Joss Stone, who is in St. Louis for a concert at the Pageant this Friday, was visiting children at Cardinal Glennon and autographing t-shirts. She came into the room (with permission) met Grandma Diann and I, and signed a shirt (no photos of Rosie). She was very nice and complimentary of Rosie and her colorful room, which is covered with balloons, stuffed animals, photos, cards, butterflies, and fairies (Thanks Aunt Lynn!). Of course, Tom left the room and Diann and I spent most of the time trying to remember who Joss Stone is - Mel, is she the one you like so much? Anyway, it was a fun moment and I can't wait until Rosie wakes up tomorrow and we can tell her all about it! More tomorrow after her breathing tube is removed. Love to all, Kendra P.S. I found Joss Stone's website and I remember who she is now!

Jul 03: Surgery went well. They removed all the stitches and reinforced some of the more animated areas on her face and neck. The tissue all looks good. The Doctor stressed that this is just the beginning and we have a long road ahead. However, they want Rosie to start being a kid again and heal for a while. We will probably be here for at least two more weeks with all of the physical therapy she will have to go through in order to get her muscle strength back. They hope to take the tube out tomorrow morning.

Jul 03: Well, the Doctors had a schedule opening and took Rosie to the O.R. at 9:AM. They are not going to extubate her until tomorrow at the earliest due to all of the sedatives she has been given in the last 24hrs. As much as we would like to see her without the tubes running into her nose, we understand that they are taking every precaution. She couldn't be in better hands! Kendra and I cannot begin to think of a way to thank all of you for everything. You are all keeping us strong, and most importantly keeping Rosie strong! WE LOVE YOU ALL! Tom

Jul 02: Hello again. My Aunt Connie just emailed and asked for the zip for Carbondale. Here's the full address: Reach Out to Rosie First Southern Bank 301 E. Main Street Carbondale, IL 62901 Thanks!

Jul 02: Wednesday, July 2 It is now the wee hours of Wednesday morning and I just returned from the hospital. Rosie is doing great (and still trying to get out of bed!). The doctors think they may be able to remove her breathing tube at the end of her surgery on Thursday. Once she starts breathing on her own her nurses will begin to decrease her sedation and pain medications, then we can get her up and about. Paul is going home to grandma and grandpa's house today and probably won't be back until sometime after Rosie's surgery. We have had so much fun with him! Shhh, I think he just woke up! Thanks again to everyone. And a special thanks for all the wonderful messages from the friends I grew up with. Mary must have all you guys on speed dial! (XXOO to you Mary Eads!) I'll sign on again after the surgery on Thursday. Much love, Kendra

Jun 30: "fixed slashes"

Jun 30: Monday, June 30 Hello everyone! Just met with two of Rosie's Ear, Nose & Throat doctors this morning and she is on schedule for surgery this Thursday. The plan is to remove the stitches in her face, check everything thoroughly - with most of the attention going to the status of the skin flap and how well it is attached to her gum. They will also be removing the stitches in her arm and checking the blood flow to her arm. At this time, we are not sure when she will undergo the first of a series of surgeries to form her bottom lip - it all depends on her rate of recovery. Right now she is doing great (she's such a tuff little cookie). Even though she is completely "snowed" she keeps moving all over her bed! One of her doctors has described it best by saying "she has a healthy disrespect for the medical profession - which will work in her favor!" She is getting wonderful care - these people are truly amazing! We can't begin to thank everyone for the beautiful and inspiring messages, prayers, and the generous donations. We are so fortunate to have so many wonderful friends. I especially want to thank the Gordons - without whom we wouldn't be able to get through any of this. I couldn't have dreamed a better family to become part of - and they just happen to be the best grandparents ever! I also want to thank J and Debbie for the Reach out to Rosie fund, this website and everything else (including all the love). Tom, Rosie, Paul and I are so lucky to have you guys as family. And I can't imagine a better group of people to work with every week than all you guys at Thomas Publishing, the Nightlife, and the Carbondale Times (wow, we sound so big!). And thank you Tom Heller for setting up this website! Time to go - we'll keep everyone posted. MUCH LOVE - Kendra, Tom, and little brother Paul

Jun 28: Just to let you all know that Rosie is doing fine this Saturday morning; she is resting comfortably. Sometime this coming week she will go back into surgery to remove the stitches from her face and the staples from her arm where they took the tissue, artery, and tendon to reconstruct her chin and bottom lip. Tom and Kendra are doing well; Kendra's sister, brother and good friend, Missy, are visiting with them until Sunday. Tom and Kendra have been able to move into the Ronald McDonald house just a block from the hospital; they were 12th on the list just a few days ago and all of a sudden there was a place for them. I think all of you angels out there had some thing to do with that too!! Keep your thoughts and prayers coming; they are working so well for all of us; we all need you. Thank you all for all you are doing and we appreciate all the comments that you are posting. Love, Diann and Jeff Gordon

Jun 27: Update coming soon. Please check back.

Jun 27: The Blog Is Now Online!
